Spot the difference that 300mm of rain makes.

Two photos, same paddock, same variety of oats, both being mown for hay. The left photo was taken 7th October 2015 when the crop was moisture stressed, thin, short and leaves browning off. And on the right is us mowing today … the oats are lush, green, thick and very tall.

We sow these oats in late May and cut in October;
2015 we got 119mm of rain in that time, this year we got 405mm.

With our average yearly rainfall normally being only 420mm we have certainly been blessed this year.

  1. You will be rich this year. Put it away for debt reduction or a bad next year. Happy farmers make Australians happy.

  2. It is amazing what a difference it makes isn't it? You can water/irrigate to your hearts content, but rain is soooooo much better.

  4. Isn't it interesting to compare them side by side? I've done similar photo studies with pastures/creeks. It definitely reveals that well-timed rain is quite a blessing. Enjoy the harvest!

  5. What an amazing contrast. We have had a drop at last and the grass is actually sprouting a bit of green again:-) Have a great weekend. Diane
