No, the devastating fires you are probably hearing about are in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, the closest one being about 1,000kms north of us. This is the Murray River and it is on the southern boundary of New South Wales and flows into South Australia. This water has come out of storage dams that are part of the Snowy Mountain Scheme built during the Depression to "drought proof inland Australia" and is now being used to flood forests... while much of Eastern Australia is in drought & importing wheat amongst other things.
