Rainfall scarf

You may recall during 2020 I documented the maximum temperature of each day by knitting a temperature scarf. This year I’m knitting a rainfall scarf, one row per day for the year, using shades of blue when it rains & eyelet rows to separate the months. Knitted in hand-dyed mini skeins from Dyeing to Knit & Cloud Forest Yarns.

We don’t get a huge amount of rain; our long-term yearly average rainfall is 433mm (17”) & 52 wet days. We will see how this plays out during the year. And yes… that is only 0.5mm for all of April. We are hoping for some rain real soon.

Anzac biscuits are a favourite throughout the year but are especially poignant at this time.

Preparing for winter

January 2, 2021

2020 temperature scarf is finished.

Each row is the maximum temperature of the day & beads added for rain. The top maximum was 45.9°c on Jan 31st & the lowest maximum was 7.1°c on July 7th.

Surprisingly light blue, with a temperature range of 14 – 16.9°c, had the most rows.

8 months of my 2020 temperature scarf.

The coldest day so far – top of only 7.1°c on 7th July when the fog didn’t lift all day.
I needed to add a new colour being that cold - grey.

The last 7 days has been the most stable temperature for the year to date…. before today’s cold blast.

Scarf knitting kind of weather.

Using a pattern from blogger Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and Australian merino wool hand dyed by Saltbush Skeins of Hay, NSW…. with colours inspired by nature, this one’s pale eucalyptus.

The quarterly edition.

I allow myself the luxury of making a Farm-ily Blog Book for each quarter. The books are really only for my benefit at the moment. A tangible record of this blog - and one that won’t suddenly disappear at the whim of the internet! But I am hoping that the record that I am keeping of our farming operation on a daily basis may be interesting viewing some years down the track with future generations...

Who else makes books with their blog posts?
