Each year we host Year 11 students from a high school on the south coast of NSW. They are studying Earth & Environment, Agriculture or Food Technology and our farm is part of their six day camping field trip focusing on the Murray Darling Basin.

It is always a pleasure to have them on farm… keen to learn and not afraid to ask questions.

The rain gauge thief strikes again.

The lid & measuring flask are missing... again.
I suspect we have a resident bird that has a penchant for rain gauges or one that just likes playing hide & seek with us. Many times we have found the lid and flask lying on the ground or in the channel and put them back in place only for them to be missing again the next day. Unfortunately we can’t always find them… hence the need for the new gauge. I even tested this one before buying to make sure the lid was a tight fit. Not tight enough apparently. We need to set up surveillance… after I buy another rain gauge.

Scientists and students

Each year we host Moruya High School’s Agriculture and Earth & Environmental Year 11 students. Moruya is on the south coast of NSW, some 650kms east of us on the other side of The Great Divide. They come out west to the “flatlands” for a science field trip.

Fortunate for them today was also the day that the team from the National Oat Breeding Program were inspecting their trial plots.

Scientists working in the field talking to Agriculture and Earth & Environment students... what a wonderful combination.

Had a bit of fun experimenting with star trailing.
It’s not perfect but not too bad for a first attempt.
