Lesson #1: don’t sleep under a windrow of hay.

I did umm & ahh as to whether to share this photo that was taken whilst baling hay early this morning.
It’s not pretty.

Foxes are a major pest in Australia having been introduced in 1871 when shipped from England for the purposes of sport hunting. They have decimated our native wildlife and continue to cause much harm. As you have probably gathered from my blog over the years we love our native wildlife here so we really dislike foxes. But a living thing is a living thing... he wouldn’t have known what hit him & it would have been very quick.

  1. I see you doubt, but these things happen. Rather different to how a dog might bail up a fox.

    1. I see Rose has asked the question which I have been pondering over. How come the fox didn't hear or sense the baler coming?

    2. Short little span of attention here. That should have been Helen, not Rose.

    3. We did wonder the same thing... why didn't it hear the tractor & baler coming? Our guess is that it was either sound asleep with a full belly from a night of hunting or that it was hiding under the windrow.

  3. Sad for many reasons--- Farm people are far more practical about many more things.

  4. Nothing wrong with posting this. It is a fact of life... or should I say death.

  6. People should know that life isn't always pretty...

  7. I agree with Rose.
It seems odd that the fox didn't scamper when it heard the machinary noise.

  8. I read this and it reminded me that one of my hobby-horses is farmers who say that hunting is not sport but simply the best way of keeping foxes down. My first question is "Why, then, were they exported to Australia to be hunted?" There are no foxes in New Zealand but feral cats are a major nuisance.

    1. Quite so Graham about ye olde England. Humane feral animal eradication is the way to go, and no exporting our possums in your country back to us. We have enough, thanks.
